1st, 2nd and 3rd VII v Westbourne

1st, 2nd and 3rd VII v Westbourne

We were delighted to greet a slightly depleted squad of nine Westbourne players for Wednesday’s scheduled 1st XV match. After agreeing to split the 1st XV this meant there was a series of 7-a-side matches for each team and some novel extra 7’s practice.

First to play were the 1st VII. It quickly became clear that were the more experienced side, with the team drilling a succession of tries past the Westbourne squad. Seven converted tries were scored. These were from Ollie N (2), Will A, Rufus (2), Seth A, Freddie R-S. Conversions by Ollie N. Huge credit must be paid to the Westbourne side who kept their chins up and finally managed to snaffle a try. Leaving the score a 49-5 win to S. Anselm’s.

The next match was the encounter between the S. Anselm’s 1st and 2nd VII’s this was a toughly contested clash, resulting in some terrific rugby. The highlight of this match must’ve been the tackle Will A used to put down James B. The end result was a win to the 1st VII 21-12. Tries going to Ollie N (2), Ben E, James B, Rufus L for their respective sides.

The third fixture of the day pitted S. Anselm’s 3rd VII against Westbourne, in a surprise appearance for some of the S.Anselm’s 2nd XV. This was the most even match of the day with some great tries scored to either side. Scorers for the S.Anselm’s team were Freddy H (2) and Kevin H, with these two players putting together some smooth and intricate exchanges. The final score was a draw, of 21 all.

The last match of the day was the Anselm’s 2nd VII vs Westbourne, with the addition of Rufus L slipping into the Westbourne ranks to add some fire to their backline and making it a solid contest. Particularly entertaining were the tackles and runs of Monty and Rufus were for once on opposing sides. The result of this match was a 14-0 win to the Anselm’s 2nds. Try scorers were James B and Ben E.

A great afternoon’s fun for all, it was well worth the additional match, just on the basis of making Mr Northcott run some extra lengths of the pitch! He refereed superbly!
