S.ANSELM’S 60-2 (5 overs) beat GROSVENOR 43-0 (5 overs) by 17 runs

We made a pleasing start to our annual festival with a comfortable win against Grosvenor. Ollie Rudd batted throughout and Edward Salisbury and Elliot Todd added the necessary impetus. Alex Woolhouse put practice inaccuracies behind him to go for just two runs in his over, but there were a sign of things to come as every other bowler conceded ten runs. Thankfully we’d made a good score first.

S.ANSELM’S 62-2 (5 overs) lost to FAIRFIELD 63-1 (5 overs) by 5 wickets

Edward Salisbury departed early, but Alex Woolhouse scored freely and with Ollie Rudd again batting through, we posted an imposing total against a team who’d already beaten Grosvenor and Grace Dieu. We were helped by some double bounce no balls from Fairfield. In reply Alex Woolhouse, Jonah Greetham and Elliott Todd bowled us into a seemingly unbeatable position as Fairfield were left needing 39 runs from two overs. Unfortunately, the wheels came off with some above waist-high full tosses which were carted for four as 26 runs came from the 4th over and Ollie Rudd couldn’t stem the flow in the last over either.

S.ANSELM’S 60-3 (5 overs) lost to GRACE DIEU 64-0 (4.2 overs) by 6 wickets

The four batsmen getting a chance again didn’t let us down and we were well placed at the interval but a shell shocked bowling line up were again put to the sword by some impressive Grace Dieu batting and they easily passed our total : a bit of a concern when one considers that, in the play off for 5th-8th position, Grace Dieu came 8th : they only won two matches all afternoon against ourselves and Grosvenor.

S.ANSELM’S 48-2 (5 overs) beat WELLOW HOUSE 37-2 (5 overs) by 11 runs

On to lower field and we had to work hard to beat an inexperienced Wellow House team. The one real criticism of our batting was most evident here – the running between the wickets. We needed to take many more ‘risky’ singles / turning ones into twos in this form of the game. Harvey Williams continued to do a sound job behind the stumps for someone who hasn’t played this position before.

S.ANSELM’S 60-2 (5 overs) beat OLD HALL 45-3 (5 overs) by 15 runs

Lewis Herdman took the opportunity to make the most of a rare chance to bat this afternoon to build on our good start and, when fielding, we continued to impress. Three direct hit run outs in these last two matches. The bowling, though, was very ordinary – apart from Elliot Todd’s wicket against Fairfield and one for Harvey Williams in this match, the other wickets were all run outs ...

Overall, I would give the batting 7½ / 10: it would’ve been better than this if our running between the wickets had tested the fielders more. The fielding secured 8½ / 10, very pleased here. The bowling, 2 / 10 is a concern. Even bowlers who generally bowled straight and with a good length posed little difficult for opposition batsmen – e.g. Ollie Rudd went for 47 runs from his 4.2 overs and, of course, those full tosses from other bowlers just made life so easy for the opposition. It is, of course, so early in term. Net practice resumes tomorrow!
