On a pleasant sunny afternoon S.Anselm’s hosted 11 other schools in a six a side Festival. The Under 11 side made a pleasing start to their season winning three of their four matches and finishing in fifth position. The lessons to be learned from this Festival the art of batting in this form of cricket is to place the ball into the many gaps in the field and to score from the majority of balls faced. Details of their matches are as follows:
S. Anselm’s 56-2 (5 overs) beat Terra Nova 26-2 (5 overs) by 30 runs
Freddie H and Jack H got our innings off to a good start and Hugo R added some much needed impetus later in the innings. When bowling Freddie H and Oliver R took wickets and along with John W and Jack M-M kept the run rate down and a convincing victory was secured.
S. Anselm’s 35-2 (5 overs) lost to Malsis 36-1 (5 overs) by 5 wickets
The Malsis bowling was very accurate and we found it hard to score quickly, with only Freddie H making a significant contribution with the bat. Freddie H bowled tightly being well supported by Jack H. With Malsis requiring 7 runs off the last over to secure victory, Jack M-M bowled a superb over conceding only 3 runs from the first five balls, his last ball proved too good for everyone beating the batsman, stumps and wicketkeeper for Malsis to grab a thrilling win from the last ball.
S. Anselm’s 48-1 (5 overs) beat Grosvenor 45-5 (5 overs) by 3 runs
Another nail biting match but this time the result went in S.Anselm’s favour. Freddie H once again was the star performer with the bat as all the other batsman struggled. When in the field Oliver R took a good catch to dismiss the Grosvenor star batter. With Grosvenor needing 7 runs from 7 balls the match turned on a piece of fantastic fielding by Oliver R who threw the stumps down to execute a very important run out. Jack M-M once again bowled an accurate last over to see S.Anselm’s to victory by a small margin.
S. Anselm’s 29-3 (5 overs) beat Birkdale 19-1 (5 overs) by 10 runs
In a very low scoring match only Oliver R mastered the opposition bowling making a useful contribution. All of the bowlers did their job bowling accurately and Birkdale eventually fell well short of their target.
