Sports Report Weeks 1, 2 &3 – Autumn Term

The term has got off to tremendous start on both the boys and girls front in fantastic weather.
The boys were first to play some competitive fixtures on Saturday 12th September, with the 1st XV travelling to Oakham School to play against Witham Hall as a curtain raiser to their 1st XV match against Stowe. Unfortunately our boys did not distinguish themselves with a below par performance and lost the match 39-0, Freddie R-S made some aggressive runs and was player of the match. On the same day our 2nd team went to the Worksop College Festival and played Sevens, they played very well much to the delight of Mr Mace winning two and losing two of their four matches. Our Under 11 team were at the same festival playing 12 a side and managed a win, a draw and two losses in their four matches, with some very promising play.
Our under 9 team were next to take to the pitch on Wednesday 16th September travelling to Wellow House, with many of the boys experiencing their first taste of competitive contact rugby. They did tremendously well managing to win 15-5 with tries from Angus E, Ludo L and Hamish O’R.
The girls took 55 players to Oakham on Wednesday 16th September a wonderful achievement in itself to get so many girls playing, some of which were playing their first competitive hockey matches four matches were won (U13A, U12A, U11A & U11B) and two lost (U11C & U11D), a long day but well worth the trip.
The boys 1st XV rugby travelled north on Saturday 19th September, training on Morcambe Beach in the afternoon , playing ten pin bowling in the evening before retiring to a local hotel before competing at the Sedbergh School Festival the next day. The XV’s play was much improved from the previous week and they managed a win and three narrow defeats in their 4 matches, including only losing by one score to Witham Hall. The weekend was fun packed and a great team building exercise, our thanks to Mr Berry and Mr Watt for accompanying the boys. There were three home rugby matches against Maidwell Hall on the same day with the Under 11A team winning narrowly 12-7, the Under 11B losing 25-5 and the Under 9’s also lost 25-10, it was a wonderful afternoon of rugby with a super atmosphere with lots of parents watching from both schools, a total of 56 boys were involved a great achievement.
The girls U12 & U13 hockey teams travelled to Mount St Marys with the U13A having most of the play but losing 1-0 and the Under 12’s recording a comfortable 4-0 win. The U11A and U10A teams travelled to Barlborough Hall and won 7-0 and 6-0 respectively. The U13A girls had an additional fixture on Sunday 20th September at home against a touring Witham Hall team; in a very competitive match that went from end to end honours were shared with a 1-1 draw.
On Wednesday 23rd September, 74 boys travelled to Denstone College to play matches against Denstone and Smallwood Manor, this was a great achievement to get so many boys playing competitive rugby. The 1st XV salvaged a 19-19 draw after trailing for much of the game, the 2nd XV lost 32-0 to a much bigger team, the U11A were outwitted and lost 28-12 but have chance for revenge with a return match at S. Anselm’s later in term, the U10’s won comfortably 60-10 and the U9’s got back to winning ways with a 25-15 win.
We look forward to the weeks ahead with lots of fixtures and as many pupils as possible being involved.
