EXTRAS FOR SPRING 2010
Please note that all parents have had a digital copy of the new Spring Extras programme emailed to them along with a form. If these could be returned by the new deadline of FRIDAY 27th NOVEMBER it would be much appreciated. Alternatively, hard copies are available in the School Office and at the Ceilidh on Sunday.
Any items marked as ‘NEW’ are either brand new, or have not been running in the last term.
NEW – Beginners’ First Aid Mrs H. Thompson / Mrs. H. Seddon
Senior pupils will get the chance to learn the essentials of emergency First Aid from the School’s Matron and Nurse. A specified course guideline and handbook will be used, with pupils progressing throughout the term looking at all aspects of how to deal with injuries in different scenarios in a laid back and interesting way.
NEW – Games Club Mrs C. Weatherley
So who would enjoy Games Club?
Would like to learn new board games or revisit old ones? Are you a whiz at Patience or a master at Backgammon? If the wordy demands of Scrabble interest you and the high spending of Monopoly makes you tick, then an afternoon at Games Club might be just the thing.
NEW – Intermediate Computer Game design Mr M. Cassidy
A perfect follow on for those who enjoyed last terms immensely popular Computer Gaming Extra. This aims at giving pupils with some level building experience the opportunity to stretch and hone their skills even further, as well as introducing new skills and techniques. Participants must have completed the previous term’s Extra in Beginners Computer Gamed Design before being allowed to sign up for this one.
NEW – Junior Chess Club Mr J. Franklin
First, second and third girls and boys are offered the chance to learn the basics of chess and pit their wits against each other in a relaxed and enjoyable setting. This Extra is aimed primarily at those wishing to either learn how to play chess, or to improve their skills from a beginner to a more intermediate level.
NEW – Junior Play Mr J. Weller / Mrs S. Taylor
Next term, pupils from 3rd year downwards will be putting on performances of ‘Sparrows’, a musical set in wartime. Rehearsals will take place during Extras and only pupils with main speaking parts should sign up for this extra. If you are one of those pupils, you will have received a separate letter stating this.
NEW – Middle Girls’ Exploring Mr. A. Salt / Mrs S. Taylor
Explore some of the hidden nooks and crannies of the beautiful Derbyshire countryside! Middle Girls’ Exploring runs on a Thursday afternoon and lasts around an hour and a half. There is often a snack during the visit, and sometimes Mr Salt’s dog, Max, may accompany us. Come and join in the fun…….
Please note that Wellies are required for this Extra!
NEW – Mixed Football Miss S. Campey
Boys and girls of varying ages and abilities are given the opportunity in this Extra to receive coaching from a former Female England U21 player. Different ball skills will be covered, as well as match practice and how to interact and read a game as it develops.
NEW – Model making Mr. M. Donaldson
This term sees the return of the ever popular model making Extra. Children can spend this relaxing Extra building and painting Airfix or Warhammer models of their choosing. The nominal charge for the term is purely for materials such as glue and paints. Children can either bring their own models of choice at the start of term, or can alternatively speak to Mr Donaldson prior to Friday 11th December in order that he can then order a specific kit for them (these will be added to individual bills at the end of the term).
NEW – Mini Olympics
Mini Olympics is a really fun, energetic activity for all children and is run by the popular local company ‘born2move’. Our mini Olympics consists of five events; Sprint, Agility, Accuracy, Javelin/ Ball throw & Jump. All these are based on the core events at the real Olympics so that the children get a sense of the real thing.
The class are split into teams and then work together in their teams to achieve the highest scores in all five events to determine who claims the Gold, Silver and Bronze Medals with the emphasis on the fun not just the competing!
NEW – R.S. Project support Mrs H. Lings
Additional time and support will be given to pupils in 5X to help pupils complete their R.S. projects, which account for 33% of the overall C.E. course mark. Please note that this Extra will run during the same time as Senior Play and will be used for 5X pupils when they are not participating in a particular scene. 5B children are also given this support within their Study Skills lessons.
NEW – Scholars Club Mrs S. Taylor
This Extra aims to prepare 5th Year candidates for All-Rounder Scholarships. Activities will include debating, public speaking, communication and leadership skills, discussion of contemporary issues, writing of CVs and personal statements and many more. Please note this Extra by invitation of Mrs Taylor only.
NEW – Scottish Country Dancing Mr S. Northcott
Pupils are encouraged to twirl away, stamp their feet and clap their hands through a series of dances that they might come across in a normal dance north of the border. Traditional dances, such as the ‘Dashing White Sergeant’ and ‘Strip the Willow’ are taught in this hugely fun and informal Extra that keeps participants fit whilst really letting them enjoy themselves at the same
time!
NEW – Senior Girls ICT Club Mrs D. Young
A senior club designed specifically for girls. No computer gaming here, but just the bits that would be of interest to girls! Please see Mrs Young for more details.
NEW – Senior Play Mr J. Weller / Mrs S. Taylor
‘Return to the Forbidden Planet’, loosely based on Shakespeare’s “The Tempest” is the Senior Play 2010. The musical mixes together science fiction, Shakespeare and rock’n’roll music seamlessly to create a fun-packed and very energetic show. Rehearsals begin during Extras next term for all of the 5th year. This Extra is compulsory for all 5th Years.
NEW – Soft Toy Making Mrs H. Lings
A junior Extra that allows children to make and sew their very own cuddly toy. Children will begin with just the raw materials, and hopefully by the end of the term have a fully completed friend to take home! It also provides an excellent chance for pupils to learn some basic sewing skills.
NEW – Street Dancing
Enjoy exercise and learn some new moves with the popular local company ‘born2move’! The street dance session is aimed for senior children who are interested in coming and joining in the fun as we get into the grooves listening to some cool music and moving our bodies. The children get the results of burning energy with ease whilst learning a routine which they can perform with confidence. This is all taught in an entertaining way with a step by step technique with a simple string of moves resulting in a full routine by the end of a term A natural rhythm is helpful but everyone can do it!! All you need is a good positive attitude and the confidence of just giving it a go. Street dance has many influences and has a great way of encouraging people to express themselves whether it is in time with the music or not.
NEW - Study Skills Mrs C. Weatherley
A chance for 5th Years to take time from a busy schedule to revise quietly in a supervised environment in order to get their heads down to some serious study for CE or Scholarships. This is the ideal secondary Extra to go alongside the Senior Play.
Arts Awards Scheme (formally Drama by LTD) Mrs H. Beetham
Children are encouraged to express themselves and really let their talent show! This Extra is open to 3rd Year children upwards and works towards a nationally recognised and accredited Bronze or Silver Arts Award qualification that should be obtained in the Summer of 2010. It contains elements of both Drama and Music that will really enhance any child’s portfolio prior to going to Senior Schools. Please note that any pupils signing up will need to attend for the full year and as a consequence will only have one other Extras choice for the duration of the 2009/10 academic calendar.
Art Portfolio Mrs J. Pryor
This is an opportunity for potential future scholars to build up a portfolio of work.
Please note that this is for pupils who are seriously considering art scholarships and must be cleared with Mrs Pryor before signing up. Pupils may choose to attend one, or both, of the Portfolio sessions offered.
Cooking Mrs C. Price
Pupils learn how to make tasty teatime treats (usually involving lots of chocolate!) in a fun and enjoyable Extra open to all age groups (Seniors only on a Tuesday, Juniors and 4th Years on a Thursday).
Ballet Mrs C. Dobinson
The ballet and dance extra is taught by Claire Dobinson (F.N.A.T.D.) and follows the syllabus of the National Association of Teachers of Dancing. The first half of the term is devoted to Ballet, currently Grade Three level, which includes barre work, centre practice and unseen combinations of steps as well as a classical Ballet dance. The latter part of term is dedicated to Modern Dance including a warm up with limbering, rhythm work, turns, kicks, leaps and combinations of steps to both pop music and set N.A.T.D. music.
Please note that this Extra runs on a Monday and not at the standard Tuesday or Thursday times.
Beginners Computer Game Design Mr M. Cassidy
Pupils will be shown how basic computer game levels are assembled and structured using various shells and building tools; they will then be give the chance to actually design their own levels to specified well known games. Of course, this will eventually lead to the all important testing of these levels by the best possible candidates: the pupils themselves! A guaranteed fun option for any children wishing to expand their understanding of technology, whilst still being able to play on the computer. This would also benefit potential ICT Scholars as it will give more breadth to future portfolios. Unfortunately, due to popularity only pupils who have not participated in this Extra before will be allowed to sign up.
Crafts Club Mrs H. Briscoe
Have fun creating, making and decorating using a variety of materials such as fabric, beads, felt, sequins, tissue paper and paint under the direction of a professional artist. Projects will include felt bags, bracelets, scrap books, cards and many more!
Digital Photography Mr S. Stoker
An opportunity to learn the skills involved in digital photography, including capturing that perfect image and just as importantly image manipulation using computers. This Extra is run by a professional photographer with many years experience in the field. Pupils do not need to bring their own cameras as they will be provided.
Gymnastics Mr K. Bacon
An excellent chance for pupils to make the most of a gymnastics coach in a small group setting and learn those all important skills needed for keen gymnasts.
Horse Riding Mr M. Donaldson
Lessons are given in small groups by Louise Thompson, former member of the England Under 21’s team, or her assistant, both of whom are BHSAI qualified. Beginners and more experienced riders are welcome - even if you have your own horse, instruction with Louise will improve your technique!
ICT Portfolio for Future Scholars Mrs D. Young
This extra is aimed at 5th years who may wish to be entered for an ICT scholarship at their future school. Children are invited to attend by Mrs Young. Throughout the term we will help the children develop a particular area of ICT specialism that they will be able to demonstrate in their Scholarship interviews and may involve designing their own website or database, podcasting, video editing etc. The decision to enter the children will depend on how much work they do in this extra and in their free time to develop their portfolio.
Lacrosse
Come and learn how to play an interesting and individual sport that originates from the Native Americans. Children learn new skills and are encouraged to work as part of a team to play this fast paced and exhilarating sport which benefits from high standard external coaching.
Mountain Biking Mr M. Speed
An exciting chance for 4th and 5th Years to stretch their legs and experience all the excitement of off-road mountain biking. This ever popular Extra would be great for anybody wishing to try a slightly different sporting activity or simply just those with boundless energy!
Children will need to bring their own bikes and safety equipment – if your child is thinking of beginning this Extra in the Autumn please contact Martin Speed for full details and a necessary equipment list prior to the start of term.
Pottery Mrs E. Eccleston
The Pottery class is an opportunity for students to enjoy themselves and be creative with clay. Pupils have fun using expressive skills and learning different techniques to produce pots by hand or using a wheel. They experience the whole process, from taking the raw clay to the finishing and glazing of their fired piece. They also make different pots for the different seasons, such as Christmas and Easter but have the chance to make pretty much make anything you can think of!
Senior Archives Club Mr D. Eaton
An essential Extra for any budding Historians out there. Pupils are given the chance to explore the School Archives and delve into S. Anselm’s history. This Extra must be discussed with Mr Eaton prior to signing up.
Swimming Mrs J. Knowles / Mr G. O’Rourke
Swimming is an opportunity for competitive swimmers to develop style and stroke technique. The children are given the opportunity to learn diving and associated skills such as starts, finishes and tumble turns as well as being given the opportunity to improve speed and stamina. It is also great fun to be with new people and a variety of age groups.
Tennis Academy Mr M. Callun / Mr. J. Gledden
Junior tennis players who have shown much potential over the last term are given the chance to go to the Abbeydale Tennis Club in Sheffield to receive performance level coaching in a small group setting (eight maximum) for one session per week. Please note that this Extra is by invitation of Mrs Northcott or Mr Callun only.
