Triumphant School Meals Week Ends

National School Meals Week at S. Anselm’s sadly draws to an end.

All pupils at S. Anselm’s certainly made the most of the final day for National School Meals Week. At breaktime the children were treated to “make your own fruit kebab” with a selection of pineapple, apple, melon, grapes, strawberries. They then tasted an array of dips which included melted chocolate, plain yoghurt with honey and strawberry compote. It was all very messy but absolutely delicious. The children voted on the fruit that they enjoyed eating and also the dips. The children also enjoyed an apple and kiwi smoothie; it certainly looked a funny colour but the children were pleasantly surprised once they tasted it! It goes to show that a very dull green coloured drink can actually taste quite nice!

For lunch, all pupils once again voted on their lunch and dessert. Friday’s speciality was salmon and prawn stir fry with a selection of vegetables and noodles and for dessert apple and mincemeat strudel served with vanilla ice cream. Again, I think the children surprised themselves and enjoyed the whole lunch.

For afternoon tea the children took part in their hard games session of rugby or hockey and afterwards they enjoyed the bagels and oatmeal and apricot cookies. It was lovely to see the winners of the food art competition receiving their certificates at lunchtime and lots of “I am a star during National School Meals Week” badges were given out for the suggestions, tastings and ideas that the children were sharing with staff and parents.

A huge thank you must go to our fantastic parents for dedicating their time and effort throughout the week. Without them, the whole week could not have run so smoothly. The parents who helped this year included Karen R, Nichola V, Roxy V, Jane G-P, Martha M, Bridget B and Steph T. Thank you also to our Head Matron, Heather Thomson, and our School Nurse and housemistress of Hillcrest, Helen Seddon. A huge thank you must go to Julie and all the catering staff for their sheer hard work towards putting all the tastings together, along with the new menu choices on top of their normal working day. This year we also saw activities taking part in the Sports Hall and Hargreaves Hall; these could not have happened without the support of Richard Newton and Martin Harrison – thank you. A final thank you to Nicki Stubley and Kerry Speed for their organisation, commitment throughout the whole week and ensuring that National School Meals Week is once again an exciting week full of educational activities, including awareness displays about sugar content in food, food tasting and voting.

It is now time for Mrs Northcott and her super prefect team to analyse the results from the whole week and you will see these on the website next week, along with additional information about the week. Many thanks must finally go to all the pupils and staff for taking part in the whole programme with such enthusiasm and energy, particularly with Born to Move! You really have been National School Meals Week superstars! Many thanks, Michelle Northcott.
