U10 v Grace Dieu, Won 6 - 1

U10 v Grace Dieu, Won 6 - 1

Players of the Match: Miriam A (Goal Keeper), Natalie G (Back)

Back on at home on grass, there was no dulling of enthusiasm.  We played one of our most difficult opponents and finished with our best score line to date, winning 6 goals to 1.

Miriam A (captain) and Natalie G (vice captain) won the toss and we started assertively.  In the first half our team played well, with all girls holding their positions effectively.  The forward combination of Amber H, Constance W and Tara O worked together and attacked hard.  They were ably supported by Grace T playing half position and Holly D continued with the long, strong balls we have come to expect.  A great attacking force ensured 4 goals in quick succession (and nearly a fifth although this goal by Holly D was scored just after the half time whistle):

1.15 Holly D (from attacking play)
    2.47 Holly D (from a short corner)
    10.48 Holly D (from a short corner)
11.30 Tara O (from attacking play)

At the same time the defence came under attack.  Natalie G (who played her best to date) and along with Tilly S, who also had a good game, came forward towards Grace Dieu’s attacking players, but still the goal came under fire.  Miriam A was able to block and kick the ball away.  Together they ensured the score line to Grace Dieu was kept at nil.

In the second half, Grace Dieu continued to push forward and all ours girls had to work hard to stop their attacks.  Three goals then followed in quick succession, 2 for S. Anselm’s and 1 for Grace Dieu:

    2.30 Holly D (from a short corner)
    6.00 Amber H (attacking play)
    12.30 Grace Dieu Forward

This brought the final score to 6-1.

Next week we have two games on Wednesday and we must not become complacent.  The girls still need to ensure sticks are held low when the opposition attacks and as we are on grass, long hits need to be accurate and we must stop hitting the ball down the centre where the opposition stand.  So let’s make more use of the wings to dribble and drive the ball forward without losing possession.

Thank you for the many spectators cheering on and shouting advice to the girls: much appreciated.
