Players of the Match
Emily H: Emily was very solid as back stop and also added to our innings totals with a strong bat.
Lily H: Lily was reactive on first post and very fast around the field, picking up lots of half rounders.
Finally a game! The weather held and we were happy to play our first match, but unfortunately the team found it hard to get up to speed and Ranby dominated the first innings. Ranby bowled accurately and where we might normally have picked up half rounders from three no balls in a row, we didn’t get any. This put pressure on the team to score by getting to second post for half a rounder or all the way to fourth post to achieve a whole rounder, but the Ranby fielders were quick and we only managed 2.5 off 21 good balls. Certainly we need to speed up between posts. Sprint girls, not jog!! Ranby batted well and gained 10 rounders. This was a total we could not match.
After refreshing oranges and a team talk, we were back on and raised our game. We batted much better and also ran more thoughtfully. Evie D and Amber H made sound contributions and were also more reactive on their fielding. Imogen A and Laura D played well at deep positions and it was good to see them trying to block balls and their throwing improved. Lexi B and Livi B batted well and worked as a team near 3rd and 4th post. Emily H and Lily H continued their positive first innings performance and took out 4 players between backstop and first post. Mimi C bowled more confidently in this second innings which helped to reduce the number of rounders scored and Ranby only scored 4 in their second innings. So had just this innings counted, we would have drawn 4-4.
Overall, it is fair to say we improved, but also we still have areas to work on. Generally all players need to be more reactive on the fielding and equally more thoughtful on the batting. We will continue to practice the basics: throwing and catching and it is important we put skills we practice like fielding blocks into our play. Thank you to all the spectators who came and cheered us on. There were lots of positive comments shouted to the girls and that really helped with their confidence and participation. It is always much appreciated.
