Players of the Match – Sophia Duguid and Lulu James
This was certainly a game of two halves in every sense! The first half reflected the lack of a warm-up and the fact that the girls had not really had a lot of practise working together as a team. In addition to playing an A team as well, the odds didn’t start in our favour.
Smallwood lost the toss but despite having the first pass, quickly took control and scored within the first 2 minutes. The S.Anselm's girls did initially flounder and seemed to not want to tackle or even fight for possession. After another goal was scored by Smallwood, a quick change of Lydia to RB and Amelia to CH saw the team slowly begin to take shape. Unfortunately a lot of the passing was to the middle of the pitch where Smallwood’s strong CF was able to gain control. ‘Hit-outs’ were also straight in front of the D allowing another quick succession of goals taking the half time score to 5-0.
After a rousing half time talk by Mrs Brailich and coaching by Mrs Elvin from behind the goal, the team finally started to show their ability. The Backs of Sophia D and Lydia G lined themselves up well and drove the ball to the wings at every opportunity. Emily A stuck to the ball and tackled well, as did Lulu J who tried to position herself in order to gain advantage and did in fact nearly score. Tikara H did well as GK and saved many more than she lost. Yasmin D, Poppy S and Amelia M also made a real effort to push the ball towards the goal.
The proof of the improvement in play was perhaps best realised by the fact the Smallwood only managed to score one goal in the second half.
Well done girls, good effort and play that you can be proud of for your last U10 match in Hockey.
