The weather certainly couldn’t have been better for the first outing this season for the U11’s. It was great experience for the girls to play five, ten minute matches against a wide variety of schools and certainly gave them the chance to use new skills learnt from the recent training sessions as well as points to improve upon in forthcoming matches.
The first match was a fantastic start to the tournament with a 2-1 win after initially being down 0-1 at the start. The girls certainly had most of the possession but were quite slow off the mark during short corners. There was excellent play by the mid players who really protected the D and sent the ball back up the SA goal as well as fierce determination from the forwards to score.
The two losses were extremely close. The match against Bromsgrove saw them gain a lucky goal off our keeper who cleared the ball forwards but did not get enough back-up resulting in the attacking opposition grabbing the opportunity to score.
Unfortunately our scores only saw us reach 3rd position, not enough to qualify for the semi finals, however, many points were highlighted to work upon such as taking the ball around the non-stick side of players, having the confidence to self-take the ball and better communication with each other on the pitch.
Things that did go well were the girl’s low position on the astro when pushing the ball to each other, the forwards working together, fantastic saves and defending by the goalie and the backs, particularly in the final two games when their confidence really kicked in.
Well done girls, a great start that bodes well for our future games!
