U11s were 2nd place overall, out of 27 competing schools and represent the region next week in IAPS National Finals, Roedean, Brighton!

CONGRATULATIONS U11 GIRLS! This is the 7th consecutive year that S. Anselm’s have had a team qualify for the IAPS National Finals, and interestingly only the 7th year that we have entered this competition. So the statistics speak for themselves, well done to all our netball players past and present who have enjoyed such fantastic success and thank you to all the superb coaches that have trained them. It was one of our squad member’s older sister, (Georgia R), whose team that set the ball rolling seven years ago.
The girls have worked hard this season, practicing at any spare moments and playing A sides a year older than themselves in their IAPS preparation. All the hard work paid off on Thursday, with them having a fabulous tournament. Up until half time, we had only conceded two goals, but had scored 25. Things became fraught two minutes before the end of their first game, when we lost GA Clare T, after a nasty collision with a Laxton player caused her to twist her ankle and make her the first player of the day to visit the St John’s staff! Amelia W stepped in calmly and confidently, pumping the balls into GS Emily H, who continued to shoot accurately, until Clare was ready to play again in round 3.
In the game against King Henry VIII our confidence took a minor slip, but we came back from being 3 – 1 down at half time to win 6 – 3 by the end of the game. St Hugh’s scraped a lucky draw with us just before full time, after we had been in the lead all game, with us suffering a minor shooting blip and making too many dodgy passes. Georgina T had a great tournament, with her passing into the shooters being superb. Poppy S also worked hard bringing the ball down the court. Georgia R was outstanding, making superbly timed interceptions, to win possession of the ball, whilst GK Imo was formidable in the D. Beth M also made some super touches to turn the ball around.
Our initial rounds saw us undefeated and clear winners of our group, drawing one, but winning the rest. We knew at this stage our ticket to Brighton was booked, and faced the winners of the other two groups to determine our overall place in the top 3. Our first game against Old Hall resulted in a draw, but unfortunately we missed some of the 2nd half game time, after a OH player was injured and took a very long time to leave the court. The game against Warwick Prep also resulted in a draw, after a closely contested game, meaning we were 2nd out of the 27 teams, as Warwick did manage a win against Old Hall.
Unlucky girls, but take great comfort from the fact that you were undefeated all day! Thank you to everyone who came to support us on Thursday, we really appreciated it and to Mr Cal and the vast array of S. Anselm’s staff for organizing such a superb IAPS Tournament, it was very slick and thoroughly enjoyable. Pack your buckets and spades girls… Brighton here we come!!!!
