The sun shone brightly for our own U11 S. Anselm’s Tournament and the atmosphere was super, with plenty of parents from each of the schools coming to watch. There were a smaller number of competing teams this year, enabling us to use a round robin format, giving each of the schools seven match altogether. Play commenced at 2pm and the splendid assistance provided by all of year 7 and 8 girls enabled us to keep to schedule, with the presentation at 4.15pm, as originally planned. The afternoon was action packed for all the teams, with the games being back to back, and a short break scheduled half way through. The standard of play was impressive and all team members enjoyed the experience, receiving a certificate of participation at the end.
After finishing second in a few tournaments, in their 5th tournament of the season it was finally our A team’s day, with them playing some super, fluid netball. They had a clean sweep, winning all of their games convincingly, to finish overall tournament winners and clinch the gold medals! Their success can be put down to hard work, determination and excellent team work, with all eight girls playing their part in Saturday’s splendid performance, well played everyone!
For the S.A. Reds, for most of them this was their 2nd tournament of the term and they finished a commendable 5th overall, with great wins against Longstone Primary (5 – 4); a super victory against Ashdell (6 – 2); and five points against our own Blues after a closely contested game (4 – 2). The girls struggled against the S.A A team, Terra Nova and Roch House, the top three teams overall), but put up a good fight against Packwood Haugh, well played Reds!
For the majority of the S.A. Blues this was their first tournament of the season and the quick succession of back to back matches took some getting used to; with them finishing 8th overall. However, they should take great satisfaction from their performance, with some of their games being very close. They were pipped 2 – 3 by Ashdell; 1 – 4 against Longstone Primary; 2 – 4 against the Reds and a super 1 – 5 result against Roch House, who were 3rd overall. A great effort girls, you battled hard and full credit for keeping on going until the final whistle each game, no matter what the score was.
Thank you to all our loyal supporters for your positive encouragement of each S.A team. Thanks to my girls’ games staff for your support and assistance with the tournament, Mrs Northcott, Mrs Elvin and Miss Skipp; Groundsmen Mick and Kev and Caretaker Martin for helping to set up the courts and grounds; all of our year 7 and 8 girls for your hard work on the day; Julie and her fabulous catering team for all the refreshments throughout the afternoon and the under 11 girls themselves for giving us all so much to cheer about!
One game left, all 3 teams face Spratton Hall away on Saturday, with Uppingham School hosting the matches. It promises to be an occasion not to be missed, spectators are very welcome!
