A fantastic day for the whole squad who showed true battling qualities and a superb team effort.
After limited opportunities to practice the Under 11 squad travelled to Repton for the Regional IAPS Tournament with a little apprehension. The boys listened well to the tactics to be employed during the Tournament and were raring to go in the first match against Stamford Junior School (the eventual winners of the whole Tournament). The S.Anselm’s team played some good hockey passing the ball well and retaining possession and when defending marking opposition players. The team unluckily conceded a goal with only 3 minutes left on the clock and responded magnificently going to the other end and Angus E scoring a fantastic goal to earn a deserved draw. This set the tone for the rest of day with the boys working for each other, listening to the instructions of the coaches and battling to the end in each and every match. A well earned win against St Olave’s , a battling draw against Bilton Grange and a good win against Beachborough brought us to the last Group match with a draw earning the boys a place in the Semi Finals. The boys were not content with a draw and played superbly to beat The Elms 2-0 and progress as group runners up.
The opposition in the semi final was Foremarke Hall who had swept all before them in the other group. The boys were far from overawed and played exactly to the plan given by the coaches and gave everything, creating chances and competing for every ball. It was cruel to concede a goal 2 minutes from the end with a deflection from one of our own sticks, they could be proud of themselves although disappointed that they didn’t progress to the Final.
Then came the 3rd & 4th Place play off against Bromsgrove School knowing the winner would progress to the National Finals at Clifton College on Monday 21st March 2011. The boys responded well to their disappointment from the previous match taking the play to Bromsgrove and being rewarded with a goal after just two minutes, the boys didn’t sit on this lead and played some really good hockey and defended extremely well. It was a long 13 minutes, but the boys did it and Bristol here we come!
I have not mentioned any individuals in this report as this was a true squad effort and testament to what a group of boys can achieve with sheer grit, determination and listening well to the advice of the coaches.
There were two extremely proud coaches, Mr Callun and Mr Brock and some jubilant parents.
The parents support was instrumental in the boy’s success on the day and I thank them for this.
