The tough first few minutes of this match were not indicative of things to come. Birkdale appeared to be a big, physical team and put us under pressure early on. We managed to retrieve the ball deep in our own half and so storming runs from Cameron D and weak tackling from Birkdale led to our first try that was converted by Alex W. From this point on, much of the first half was one way traffic. Nick P showed his strength throughout and the backs displayed improved handling and organisation which together led to us scoring four more tries in the first half. Unfortunately we lost concentration slightly towards the end of the half and we conceded a try.
We made some changes during half time and it took a little while for the team to get up to speed again and we conceded a try early on. From this point we started controlling the ball again, winning the ball in the break down and the backs were by now playing some very attractive, expansive rugby. This led to three more tries for S. Anselm’s. In the end we ran out 52-12 winners. Another good performance and this needs to continue against Westbourne on Wednesday.
