The teams took to the field on a lovely afternoon of early spring sunshine.
Once the match settled it was soon obvious that Birkdale were the stronger team with one particular quicksilver forward who carried a serious threat. However, we battled well and it was a bit of a shame that we completely gifted them two of their three first-half goals.
Turning round at 0-3, the match could have run away from us but to the credit of the team it didn’t. The second half was more even and while we didn’t ever look like wiping out the deficit, we were more threatening and only conceded one more.
In a battling performance, several players impressed. Harvey and Hamish worked hard in midfield; Ludo and Tom were ferocious in defence; Peter, drafted in to help them, was pleasingly determined. Jonah was safe and secure in goal; Angus carried a threat up front despite a lack of clean possession. Man-of-the-match has to be awarded to Ludo; his unquenchable spirit would gladden the heart of any manager.
