Buxton didn't have as many '4th years' as I thought they'd play in this fixture … last year a talented U12 Buxton outfit overcame our competent U11's 3-1, our most recent U11 boys hockey defeat … today an early goal by Jack M-M against their 'A' team basically decided this fixture and, with constant pressure on the opposition goal, it was no surprise that we finally won 4-0. Jack M-M was lethal from the top of the 'D' with his powerful hitting, despite not having his favourite stick, whilst such quality ball control from Edward S and Jack H meant other opportunities to score were never far away.

I praised our defensive duo of William H and Elliott W on Wednesday for their contributions to attacking moves … they did this ever so well again today, but they must not get complacent … there were occasions today when they were caught out too far forward and the best of teams would've punished them for being too attacking. That said, Elliott W takes the man of the match award for his super play both as defender, covering defender, and attacking midfield … a real Steven Gerrard-esque performance … well played!

Charlie H, good to see him back in action following his injury on Wednesday, battled hard down the left wing, though he needed to just face the action a little more to pick the ball up on his open stick more easily. Hugo R had to make a few sensible saves in goal, but was untroubled for the majority of the afternoon.

Overall this was a pleasing performance and there are a number of key fixtures to come, but I'm just disappointed that we're missing a Foremarke Hall (who were unable to accommodate us this term) or a Bilton Grange this season … you look likely to finish with a successful record, but a few more 'household names' would've been good to have been included in this list … that said, well done, again, today: you can only play the opposition on the fixture card …!

Our 'B' team had a good afternoon too, though they ought to have 'got something' from their match against the Buxton 'A' team as we were on top for so much of the first half. The win against the Buxton 'B' team, something I didn't see as I was umpiring the 'A' team fixture, was a super victory as their 'B' team included a lot of enthusiastic and talented young players who troubled our 'A' team. Alex W was up and down that left wing with much panache, the defenders covered each other well, though all too often left someone unmarked, whilst Charles A and Charlie L used the wings very well indeed. Peter Crouch (Henry F) scored another good goal and Ben E and John W cleared effectively from the back when they didn't have too much to do … with William W involved a lot as well, it was a whole team effort. Next week it's U11A, U11B and U10 against Derby Grammar … I hope to include all the 2nd years in the U10 match, so there's a few places open in the U11 'A' and 'B' teams … there's a lot of important practices to come! Well played today though!
