The U11A team have got used to winning fairly comfortably in recent weeks but this was always going to be a much tighter match, against a side who have not yet lost. This became very evident in the first ten minutes when we found ourselves very much on the defence. Our normal tackling prowess and much improved retention of the ball in rucks and mauls seemed to have deserted us for the first part of the match. We were very lucky to be just one try down by this point.
After this point we came out fighting. Bertie W was finding some space down the right wing and he made some excellent runs, one of which resulted in a try for Alex W that was converted and brought the scores level early in the second half. We were unlucky not to take the lead shortly afterwards as Charlie S made a powerful run but the ball was knocked out of his hands as he was going over to score. Unfortunately, one of the Elms’ faster players broke free and scored a try to take them back into the lead. Despite a concerted effort we were unable to bring the scores back level and lost 14-7.
