S.Anselm’s 224-9 declared (70 overs) Elliot T 36, Matthew N 20 The Fathers 222 all out (33 overs) Cameron D 3/8
S.Anselm’s won by 2 runs
The same result as last year! The boys won by 2 runs, after a recount ...! Then it was 227 played 225 (96 overs of cricket). This year it was 224 played 222 (103 overs of cricket!). I suggested last year was a record number of overs in a S.Anselm’s cricket match ever, well, this year we had seven more! The boys struggled throughout their innings. There was no dominant partnership. Both openers, after early scares (!), survived for a while. Isaac S needs to practise his bat swing and bringing the bat down straight whilst Matthew N is getting too bottom handed with his off side shots. Both, along with Alex W and Edward S also need to move their feet more when batting! Edward S played and missed at half the balls he faced and never looked in whilst Ollie R never looked to be in the mood to play a proper innings today. There were periods of resistance from Lewis H and Theodore H but the two innings which took the boys to something close to what they needed came from Elliot T and Jonah G. Elliot has always been strong on the legside, has now improved his defensive technique – now it’s the offside play that needs to be looked at. Full marks to you, however, for batting for well over an hour. Bertie W batted with the confidence to suggest a recall to the team is just around the corner (and you fielded well too) and Harvey W shared a good 24 runs 12th wicket partnership (sounds like a game in 19th century England!) with Jonah as the boys passed 200. Lunch came and went at 40 overs and the boys batted on for 70 overs!?!
Matthew N and Harvey W continue to have impressive bowling averages as they weren’t ‘taken to the cleaners’ today whilst also taking a wicket. Edward S took a wicket with his best ball – picture that and bowl it as often as possible! Well flighted outside off stump and spinning in! Despite some lusty blows from Mr Rudd the Fathers looked to be slipping inexorably towards defeat but Mr Speed and Mr Hunter shared an impressive 59 run stand, only broken when they lost concentration following calls of ‘retire!’ from the boundary edge from their team-mates! Cameron D bowled an impressive spell to take three wickets, all bowled, and when Harvey W dismissed his dad with the plumbest lbw of the game, it all looked over for the Dads. We reckoned without the experienced cricketing-duo of Mr Greetham and Mr Drury, however. With accurate bowling from both their sons (Jonah G also kept wicket well to take the man of the match award) the Dads total came very close to that of the boys. At some point, it must have been a flashback, I saw Mr Drury clear mid-on with a four, but I awoke to see him stumped, our 11 year home unbeaten run intact!
