U11A v Birkdale Lost by 6 wickets

On a cold , blustery and damp evening on the Tunbridge Pitch, the Under 11A team entertained Birkdale in a Twenty/20 match.

George M lost the toss and his team were asked to bat. Jonah G and George M made steady progress until Jonah was bowled by a good ball. FredB-B hit a wonderful first shot off his legs for 3 but then gave a soft catch to be dismissed for 3. George M was then bowled for 4. Meanwhile Ludo L was at the crease and was playing a wonderful innings waiting for the bad ball and then punishing it. However, wickets were tumbling all around him with the boys playing cross bat shots to straight bowling. Angus E scored 4, Hamish O’R 1, Bertie S 0, Will B-B 0 & Tom D 2. Ludo was the 8th wicket to fall but not before he had amassed 34 runs ( 1 six & 5 fours) a great achievement for an Under 10 boy. Toby C was left unbeaten on 0. So a total of just 68 was managed, the most disappointing aspect was that only 12 overs were batted out when the side should and could have used 20! The lesson to be learnt is that there is plenty of time and you do not have to score off every ball as Ludo demonstrated, wait for the bad ball and punish it, there will be plenty at Under 11 level.

In the field S.Anselm’s battled hard and were rewarded in the first over when Angus E hit the stunps with a direct throw and ran one of the Birkdale openers out. Ludo and George bowled steadily but needed to bowl a fuller length to trouble the batsman more, Ludo took a wicket and conceded only 11 runs in his permitted 4 overs, George was unlucky not to take a wicket with a catch being dropped but only conceded 10 runs in his 4 overs. Jonah G bowled very well and was rewarded with a wicket and went for 13 runs off his 4 overs. The Birkdale batsmen batted well running their singles and hitting the bad balls, they were aided by some very wayward support bowling with 24 wides being bowled, this amounts to an extra 4 overs. Toby C bowled what turned out to be the last over and took a wicket. Birkdale passed the required total in 17 overs and the match was lost by 6 wickets.

There were some real positives to come out of the match Ludo’s batting, the bowling of George, Jonah & Ludo and most of all the battling spirit of the whole team in the field in awful conditions, areas that need working upon are playing a straight bat to straight deliveries and the support bowlers being able not to bowl wides.

Well done.
