Player of the Match – Georgina T – for great passes into the D and for an awesome final quarter that saw her intercepting passes and marking her player out of the game.
U11 Squad: Clare T (GA), Emily H (GS), Georgia R (GD), Imo C (GK), Beth M (WD); Georgina T (C), Poppy S & Amelia W (WD/WA).
Our girls faced extremely windy conditions in this game, with the gusts proving to make life difficult for the shooters and when using longer passes on the court. The major tournaments this term will all be outside, so it is vital they have match experience in such conditions. Having won the toss, they were off to a good start, taking little over a minute to convert their first shot at goal. Emily H again proved to be solid and reliable as a shooter, with mid court players Poppy S, Georgina T and Clare T all working hard to feed the ball into the D and set her up in prime shooting positions. The score at the end of the first quarter saw us nudge 4 – 0 ahead. There then followed a couple of less impressive quarters, with us only adding a two further goals to our total. Our shooting record was not as good, but our passing also let us down, with players not moving for the ball and hiding behind their partners. We also forced the passes on occasion over too far a distance for these kinds of condition, only to find them either being blown off course by the gusty wind or intercepted by a Foremarke player. Our marking also let us down and for the coach the third quarter in particular was frustrating to watch. A few selective words were required after this quarter to get the girls back on track and our girls listened carefully to them and heeded the advice given. The final quarter saw them back to their playing best, with Georgina T demonstrating incredible fitness and mobility, to totally dominate play in the middle third. Her interceptions and touches enabled the girls to constantly win back the ball. Our shooting form returned and defenders Imo and Georgia marked tightly to win back the ball. Our match fitness is pleasing, but we now need to ensure in future games that we play four consistent quarters and do not allow ourselves to lose focus or form.
Well played girls, despite my comments the result speaks volumes. It was great to see so many of our supporters watching this game, thank you to all of you for encouraging and cheering on the girls. We face our first away game of the term on Wednesday, but have an opportunity to watch some superb, top class netballers in action first, at Monday’s International Game England versus New Zealand – enjoy it girls and pick up some tips!
