U11A v Gayhurst School Lost 6-1

Sometimes in sport you look at a result and feel that it doesn’t really reflect the game. In the first match of our season we probably deserved our win. We drew the second but undoubtedly should have won by several goals given our huge territorial advantage. In the third, if we could have overlooked the opening stages, a draw might have been a fair result. Then came Saturday’s match. Sometimes you just have to face an obvious truth! Gayhurst were simply too good for us, individually and collectively.

Obviously, on occasion, we contributed to our own downfall, but these were the errors of the inexperienced under the pressure of playing superior opposition. It is, however, greatly to the credit of so many of the team that they gave another resolute performance, brimming with fierce determination. In an even contest it is relatively easy to keep battling. When the odds are stacked against you, as was the case on Saturday, it takes a special mind-set to keep giving your best but that’s what the team did. Well done!

There were several outstanding contributions but we’ll confine the individual plaudits to our richly-deserved man-of-the-match award. Jonah G in goal was heroic and certainly saved us from a much heavier defeat.
