Grace Dieu 28 - S. Anselm's 0
After a very rushed journey and a few minutes to warm up, S. Anselm's took to the field to face a monstrous team who had only lost one game in 5 years! The omens did not look good as Grace Dieu swung the ball with great skill amongst their backs and scored a high quality try in the opening minutes.
Having found their feet in the match, S. Anselm's dug in and produced some excellent rugby, getting onto the front foot at times, rucking well and trying to put phases of play together with some skill. Excellently led by Kevin H, who had his best game of the season by far, the boys had their opponents under some pressure. Unfortunately at this age group, brute strength is often the deciding factor and some very well fed boys from Grace Dieu often ended up stealing the ball despite the best efforts of our forwards.
The second half was a similar story, with S. Anselm's trying to play the rugby and at times producing our best passages of play of the season. Two late tries from Grace Dieu took the shine of what was in truth a very good performance by the boys. They tackled and competed right to the last second and at all times played with great pride and intelligence. Elliot W was manful in defence and attack along with John W and the whole of the pack producing a great effort and giving the game everything they had got.
Sometimes in sport you can only look at the opposition and say 'well done' knowing that the better team had won and there is no shame in losing. This was certainly one of those days!
Man of the Match - Paddy D. How can one so slight tackle so hard?!
