This was our first match at home and the girls relished the opportunity to play on their own pitch – new this season. The conditions were good, with a bright, sunny afternoon encouraging many of our loyal supporters to come and cheer the girls on, thank you to you all! Grace Dieu had faced a long coach journey, giving our girls a good opportunity to warm up thoroughly and I was very impressed with the feisty play when we practiced our short corners prior to the game. The girls had taken the advice given after last week’s game and were slotting the ball into the goal impressively.
We got off to a strong start, coming close to scoring in the first couple of minutes. Our play then broke down a little, as Grace Dieu found their feet and proved to have a couple of physical, strong girls, capable of making good tackles and hitting the ball hard. Our first goal came just before quarter time, with Emily H finishing the ball off soundly, after a great feed from Georgia R. In the second quarter we continued to make hard work of it, bunching together and not remembering our square and through passes. Grace Dieu equalized half way through this quarter, after our defence missed a couple of tackles, and were then slow to get back, leaving Imo C facing a one on one situation from a feisty forward. We were quick to pick ourselves back up and Clare T scored our second goal soon after to boost everyone’s confidence.
Reminders at half time by the coach were soaked up by the girls, and they began the third quarter very well. The passes were very effective; they looked for each other when distributing the ball and did not shirk a tackle. Back Amelia W was super in this quarter, making well timed tackles and really pushing the ball hard up the wing, past the Grace Dieu players, to set our forwards up. Lulu J and Poppy S also worked hard and we looked a lot tighter in defence. Our third goal came from another textbook short corner, with Emily H collecting Clare’s shot just in front of the far post and slotting it past the goalie, awesome play girls! Clare scored our 4th and also had a few near misses, with the Grace Dieu goalie playing very well under pressure. In the 4th quarter Georgina T scored a further two goals for us, with her terrier tactics paying off! Beth M did some great work on the wing, winning the ball then intelligently sending it forward to another player in just the right place. Silvia also played well, proving to have good stick skills after only playing the game for 4 weeks! Goalie Imo made some good saves and cleared the ball impressively.
All in all a good team performance, with a superb second half in particular. We are back on astro next week girls, we are certainly keeping you on your toes – have a good exeat everyone!
