Each of our previous four matches this season has had some redeeming feature, something to offer some encouragement; for example, a decent win, territorial dominance, fighting qualities to the fore, a never-say-die approach. There’s always been an aspect of the boys’ play which has been a cause for optimism. Sadly, after this game it’s much more difficult to be positive.
The Elms were a better team, fair enough, and we had two players missing, but how we contributed to our own downfall! Our defence were sloppy and indecisive; how many simple clearances weren’t made? How often were the opposition almost ushered along a smooth path to goal? Going forward, we were no better. Passes were routinely misplaced, panic was the order of the day; cool clear purpose was only in the manager’s dreams.
Under the circumstances there will be no man-of-the-match award. However, there is at least the consolation of having another fixture as soon as this Friday which will quickly provide the chance to erase the memory of this rather shambolic performance.
