Player of the Match– Georgia R – for superb interceptions throughout the game, with her jumping fantastically and hooking the ball in from far and wide, a great game by her!
U11 Squad: Clare T (GA), Emily H (GS), Georgia R (GD), Imo C (GK), Beth M (WD); Georgina T (C), Poppy S & Amelia W (WD/WA).
Monday’s International certainly inspired our girls, and many of the parents watching both the under 11 teams in action in these games commented on how impressed there were by the passing, pace on court and girls’ improvement in such a short space of time.
This fixture did not get off to a good start, with us finding on arrival that we had to play back to back matches with the under 10 teams, meaning our girls and parents had to hang around waiting for a court to become free; frustrating when there were 3 spare ones in Bakewell. This meant we had to play halves, rather than quarters and a shorter game than we are used to. The girls used the spare time effectively though, taking advantage of the outside space, with these courts being in the park next to Trent College. They started the game superbly, with the passing being accurate and strong, each player moving well for the ball and marking their opponent tightly. Emily H held her space perfectly in the D and the passes into her initially were perfect. Both shooters coped very well with the odd post height – one foot lower than the norm; (I did try to move them up, after gaining permission from The Elms staff, but unfortunately the screws were welded on by rust).
In the second half The Elms were a lot more feisty and determined, although much of their footwork was not blown, to ensure game continuity. Our passing into the D was not as tiptop as at the start, and we will work on keeping this form, despite having tired arms, in training sessions. That said our footwork was excellent and it was good to see our girls really beginning to gel as a unit, with each becoming more aware of their role in the game and when gaining possession of the ball. Beth M and Georgia R support the flow of the ball all the way down the court, enabling our attacking players to press ahead and be ready for its arrival in the goal third. Both shooters work hard to convert the shots and keep the ball in the D, whilst Imo C predicts the passes impressively in the defending third, to often win the ball before it has chance to enter the D. Great team work girls!
Thank you to our incredibly patient supporters. We are back there next week, but to face the under 12B Trent College team, a good test for our girls. Then it is our first tournament of the season on the Saturday, at Foremarke Hall.
