S.Anselm's 0-0 Beeston H.C. 3rd v 4th PLAY OFF
Our 'B' team had a very impressive day. It was ever so difficult to assign players to 'A' and 'B' teams on the basis of one practice (and that was on grass, of course). William H and Ben E could easily have been our 'A' team defence, whilst Jack H looked ever so assured on the astro pitch. When one adds the super finishing skills of Edward S, what a find here - three goals from him including that all important equalizer against Beeston H.C. and two girls, Emma H and Lily S, playing so well on the wings, it's not surprising the 'B' team scored 5 and let in 3 (as against our 'A' team who scored 4 and let in 4 … and that included Hugo R's outstanding goalkeeping) … a pity our 'B' team didn't meet our 'A' team …!
An opening draw, straight out of the minibus was a respectable opening, then Edward S finished an excellent cross from William H to overcome a useful Matlock side.
We scored three against Duffield H.C. before the all important clash with Beeston. We went a goal down, but an excellent through ball found Edward S one-on-one with the goalkeeper. We held our breath and Edward slotted the ball away with much aplomb … gosh there'll be some competition for places in the boys U11 team when our matches start in the coming months.
Lucy R and William W (the latter for both teams) subbed very well throughout, Lucy always showing a good technique, but it was difficult to dislodge the excellent defenders in William H who sometimes showed such a deft first touch in taking the ball past the oncoming opposition player, and Ben E who would've been in the 'A' team had he played some more hockey this term. He stopped well, tackled with strength and hit the necessary long ball from time-to-time. With Jack H battling so hard in midfield, and showing as much skill as anyone and Lily S and Emma H holding their wings so well, we consistently attacked well.
Thankyou to George Salisbury and Jack Edwards for helping to look after the U11 'B' team today. They were both members, in 2004, of our U11 'A' mixed team that won the tournament … that final had a remarkable finish : we were losing 1-0 when the final whistle went, but we were in the process of taking a short corner. We scored from the short corner and won overall on goal difference!
We might not have won today, but the efforts of our 'B' team were ever so good and you played with skill too. Progress was made and it's certainly a shame that this might be the only time our boys and girls get a chance to play hockey together this winter. A very pleasing day all round … well done!
