Our first match of the season saw a large squad of girls play energetically against Maidwell in a competitive game, which we sadly lost 3-1 despite having 85% of the play.
Goal keeping was shared between Emily A and Yasmin D. Both girls tried hard to anticipate the play, but the three ‘break aways’ unfortunately rolled in, although several other shots were controlled and the ball was returned down the pitch. In this area we need to work on getting ready to save second and third tries at goal. The first shot can move the goal keeper to one side of the net and it is important, although difficult, to get back towards the centre of the goal with the aim of saving the next attempt.
At the back Gabby N and Grace F worked very hard at stopping the opposition’s attacks and they were able to play the ball up the field. In this area it is important the balls stopped (and there were many) are played to our team members and not just hit up the field back to the opposition or possibly off the pitch. Remember to look right and left as well as ahead. Keeping possession of the ball will win us the game.
In the centre of the field Victoria A and Sophia D played very enthusiastically. It was good to see them get stuck into play. In future matches I urge them to help the backs return the ball back up the pitch, and at times going further forward would help our chance of scoring goals.
Up front a combination of Izzy F, Lydia G, Jess P, Amelia M, Tikara H and Zara P worked very hard in attack, and Izzy F scored our only goal. In the ‘D’ how ever hard we tried, and we did try very hard, the ball would not go in the oppositions net. Now it is important for the forwards to work on goal scoring.
