We knew this would be an extremely tough day, lady luck had chosen not to shine down on us for this tournament. Not only were we put in the strongest group by far, but our toughest three games were all together at the start of the morning. The Witham game was frustrating with us drawing 1 – 1 at half-time, then leading 3 – 1, two minutes before full time. Witham fought back ferociously in the final two minutes to pip us 3 – 4 just as the final whistle sounded. Our second game was against the eventual tournament runners up Leeds Girls’ Grammar and despite fighting impressively lost to them 3 – 6. In the third game our girls’ spirit and morale nose-dived further with them losing 2 – 10 to Wakefield.
But then our fortunes changed, with some super results, which ensured our girls were once again firing on all cylinders. We beat Bablake 5 – 1, St. Mary’s Hall 5 – 1 and Elleray 6 – 1. In the final game against King Henry VIII we were the stronger team by far, but our shooters were tired and despite plenty of opportunities, the ball struggled to go through the ring, resulting in a 3 – 5 result and us finishing 4th overall in our group, just missing out on a place in the semi-finals. Unlucky girls, but let us keep our heads up and work on the speed we switch from attack to defence, our dodging ability and stronger passes. Two more tournaments to go, so still lots to play for!
Thanks to our marvellous supporters – we definitely won the award for having the best sideline support and encouragement on the day!
