U12 v Wellow House Lost 4 - 7

Player of the match - Georgia R

An unfortunate start to the season for the under 12s, who had been led to believe they were playing a not particularly strong under 13 side.  After the first five minutes it was apparent that this was not the case and the score at quarter time saw us trailing 0 – 3. The girls allowed themselves to be intimidated by the taller, more physical Wellow under 13s, with one girl in particular dominating the play. Her strong hit and game confidence enabled her to wack the ball up the pitch and at the goal, with our girls rarely challenging her and not going in for the tackles.  After a chat by the coach at half time the girls were more willing to take the game to Wellow, spending a lot of time in this quarter on the attack.  Georgia R worked hard to challenge the strong Wellow player, with Emily H and Lulu J also timing their tackles impressively.  This caused the rest of the team to raise their game, when they saw we could win the ball off the Wellow girls.  We had several opportunities to score in this quarter with some superb through balls from Georgia into the D, but unfortunately nobody was able to finish them off.  Elfie CE making her début for the SA team grew in confidence throughout this quarter and pushed forward in her attacking role.  We only conceded one goal in this quarter, but the team manager felt it was time to boost our depth and strength, with some under 13 girls.

Georgy H, Annie GP, Jess RS and Arabella H joined our squad at half time and rolled on and off the field with our other subs adding more vital confidence to our team.  They were also able to confirm the Wellow girls who we had anticipated were county players.  The boot was on the other foot for Wellow, with us scoring three goals in this quarter, from excellent team work and good finishing off of through balls in the D. We also spent a lot of time attacking and managed to rile some of the Wellow strong players.  Goalie Imo was superb, making some super saves and reacting calmly in stressful situations.  The girls’ heads were raised and their play once again moved up a notch.  The last quarter was fairly even, with both teams scoring one goal.  A tough game for the girls, but vital match experience for them.  We are in action again on Saturday, at home, definitely against a team of the same age though.  Thanks to all who came to support the girls in this game.
