OLIVIA SAVES THE DAY!

As the U12A team approached a very competitive school match against Foremarke Hall, tensions were high and they were eager for success.  S. Anselm’s won the toss and chose to field first.  Nancy S bowled brilliantly and put pressure on Foremarke Hall from the very beginning.  Foremarke Hall were placing the ball well within the field and managed to achieve 2 rounders in the first 15 balls of the game, however S.A. fielded brilliantly and communicated well causing Foremarke Hall to make mistakes. Georgia D, Eleanor T, Olivia C, Hannah S all kept tight in their fielding positions which included Georgia D shielding 2 outstanding balls to stop the opposition from scoring crucial ½ rounders.  Chloe R- S also controlled 2nd post effectively with super communication with deep fielders and Emma H at back stop which batters to fall at 2nd post. This was followed by further stumpings at 1st post by the team Backstop Emma H and 1st post Lily S.  After a great start, S. Anselm’s had bowled the team out in 32 balls. Excellent bowling from Nancy S ensured that no ½ rounders were scored due to poor bowling – well done Nancy!  Foremarke Hall scoring a creditable 5 rounders in the first innings.S. Anselm’s were ready to attack.  The batting side started off slowly but Hatty R, Emma H, Chloe R-S, Nancy S certainly stepped up a gear and the game really started!  Right handed Lucy R attempted an effective sweep towards 1st deep and unfortunately hit her mother ( I hope that Mrs Rusling is OK!) but still managed to force ½ a rounder and then went on to score well into the innings.  It was a strong performance by the whole team and the batting innings ended with S. Anselm’s scoring a super 7 ½ rounders.   The whole team batted with confidence and had placed themselves well into the second innings. In the second innings S. Anselm’s produced excellent fielding skills.  Emma S came on at 4th post and once settled into her position produced tight fielding. Fran F also continued to work hard on 3rd post sending effective balls to Chloe R-S on second post. Overall, the fielding was particularly impressive.  S. Anselm’s kept Foremarke Hall’s team scoreline down to only scoring a further  4 ½ rounders.  Foremarke Hall were all out in 29 balls and S. Anselm’s had put themselves in a very strong position to win the game.  They only had to score 2 ½ rounders to win the game! The team talk aim was for batters to go for safe half rounders and no silly decisions to run for full rounders under pressure.  This obviously did not sink in!  Foremarke Hall fielded well and by 10 balls bowled they had successfully run out key S. Anselm’s batters. It was a very interesting and exciting final innings. We had seen bats flying in the air thanks to Emma H but she was still determined score her half rounder – super commitment to scoring for her team!  The pressure was on! Foremarke Hall made quite a few excellent catches and stumpings and S. Anselm’s lost a little concentration which eventually led to S.Anselm’s only down to two players Emma S and Olivia C with only 17 balls bowled.  S. Anselm’s need ½ rounder to draw the match or 1 full rounder to win the game.  Olivia C batted superbly and with an almighty hit she eventually scored 1 rounder to win the game. Our parents, pupils and Mrs Northcott jumped in the air to celebrate an excellent rounder under such pressure.  Olivia had won the game for S. Anselms and eventually the team were bowled out for 22 balls.  The eventual score was 10 ½ rounders to S. A and 9 ½ rounders to Foremarke Hall.  It was an excellent match played in good spirit!   Well done to all the team.  It was a pleasure seeing such excellent play – you certainly kept us on our toes!   MPN
