It was certainly a fantastic match to umpire and watch today, for many reasons. Firstly, it was great to see all the girls in action and working so well together as a team; Secondly, we saw players in new positions such as Zara P in as Goal Keeper and Thirdly, we saw players in action in their first ever game of hockey – well done to Karina, Elsie, Marina and Emilie for fine performances. The squad was well captained by Gabby N, she warmed her team up well, motivated her girls throughout the match and also congratulated them on a fine win at the end of the match. Not only did Gabby captain her team so well, she was also as invincible in defence. Her tackling and determination to gain possession today was excellent and set the play up into attack. The backs certainly read the game well, Marina, Tikki and Gabby all pressured the Trent attack and won possession consistently. Zara made a few crucial saves throughout the match that certainly kept the Trent scoreline down to zero – Well done! Midfield players Emilie B, Victoria, Elsie, Karina, Amelia and Emily A all worked the ball from left to right and certainly used key coaching elements that have been covered in training since the start of term. It was lovely to see lots of support play in attack from key players and this certainly gave S. Anselm’s the edge over Trent. Lydia G today was outstanding as Centre Forward. Her stick skills were slick and she controlled the ball well into the D, In the first half it was fantastic to see her controlling the ball in D under pressure from Trent defence and she finished off her work minutes before the half time whistle with a fantastic goal which put S. Anselm’s 1 – 0 into the lead. This scoreline remained the same in the second half. Trent defended hard, but S. Anselm’s continued to put the pressure on and produce opportunities in the attacking D with a few short corners. However, we were very unlucky not to extend the scoreline. The final score was 1 – 0 Win to S. Anselm’s. Many congratulations to all players. It was a fine performance today and one to be very proud of.
