1st XV v Denstone
21/9/11
Lost 34-17
This was a tough and physical introduction for many of our players as our 15 a side season started. Denstone were big and physical but having said that we started the game well. We put early pressure on and almost scored – playing a fast 15 man game. Unfortunately they had a big and fast center who decided to run it from their in goal area. The result was a 100m try. However heads did not drop and Charlie S scored a good try to bring us level. Two more tries by Denstone opened up a gap but both were a little harsh – we had made three mistakes and had been punished with tries each time – two by their monster center. Andrew C, running hard broke through for a good try and Elliot T got one towards the end of the half. At half time it was 19-17 (just a missed conversion separating the sides).
Turning into the wind it was always going to be a tougher second half and our work rate slackened a little. The big center went over for try number three and four, and in the end we let in one more. The final score was 34-17 but their coach admitted that it may well have been that the best team did not win. Sure they had the best player but we played well as a team. Lots to be encouraged by and if we take this mentality into our future matches we will do well.
