Hopes were high after two good training sessions. However, this all fell apart after 5 minutes of the first match against Dean Close. A silly defensive error saw Dean Close take the lead, quickly a second goal followed, heads soon dropped and the only player who could come out of the match with any credit was Hugo R , he made a string of fine saves as S. Anselm's were well beaten conceding a further goal for the final score to be a 3-0 loss and but for Hugo R's heroics it would have been a lot more. The boys were determined to recover from this setback against Beachborough but within a minute were a goal down , S. Anselm's never got into the match and were overrun, with Hugo R again performing well with many fine saves and a goal in the last minute was our only consolation a 6-1 loss. Then onto our group match against Bilton Grange which saw a very poor performance, again early goals were conceded, heads went down and bickering between the team began, a 5-1 loss ensued with a consolation goal scored on the final whistle. The final group match saw another below par performance and a 3-0 loss recorded against Malsis.
The match against The Downs was not a great spectacle and after taking the lead the boys again failed to respond to the instructions of the coaches and conceded two late goals to round off a day to forget.All in all a very disappointing day for both players and coaches, when everyone knows with the usual S. Anselm's fighting spirit so much more could and should have been achieved.
Players of the Tournament Hugo R for standing up to a constant barrage of shots and Jack H for wholehearted effort throughout the day.
The boys need to work much harder and play as a group to progress. Unless they show a will and determination to win, compete and respond to the tactics and advice of the coaches, it will be a very difficult second half of term on the games field.
