A superb result for our girls who were playing much bigger schools, all of whom have astro turfs!

To only narrowly miss out on winning the tournament was a tremendous result. Full match report to follow.

What a day!
Firstly I would like to thank the girls for such an excellent start of season with attending pre-season, conducting themselves in training brilliantly and for being such a great team to work with!

Mr Brock, Mrs B and myself have worked with the girls for just 3 sessions and we have certainly seen the team develop in confidence in their own standard of play and also in the team as a whole. There have been key elements that have been worked on to prepare the girls for the start of season and the tournament and they certainly delivered them when it counted.

The day started off with a good sing song on the mini bus – Take That – “ Greatest day of our lives “and M People, “Proud”. A key team chat and the girls were off in their first game. Against Bromsgrove, Arabella H got off to a flying start with a self take from push back and drive to the D and scored within the first 2 minutes of the game. This certainly raised the tempo of the game and lifted the S. Anselm’s team. A further goal was scored and super defending ensure a win in the early stages. Against Belper Hockey Club, another tight game but a great penalty corner goal scored by Arabella H, ensured another win under our belts and crucial points in the section. The next match was against Cheadle. They had already scored well in the section, however S. Anselm’s came out to defend well and try to penetrate the ball into the D and take advantage of Cheadle’s weaknesses. The end result was a creditable 0-0, it was a fantastic match and all players were on form and performed so well under pressure. S. Anselm’s had a super win over Foremarke B and then Denstone. S. Anselm’s were on top and playing the best team hockey that we have seen for a very long time. It was really very special to see!

S. Anselm’s went through to the semi finals as winners of their section:

The team were against Beeston Hockey Club in the semi final, this was always going to be a tough match and it certainly was. However, after full time and the score 0-0, golden goal situation was called and the S. Anselm’s team were ready for pressured play. After 3 minutes of play there was an opportunity of a clear ball into the D, Ella N calmly controlled the ball and swept it into the goal from the left post. S. Anselm’s were through to the final! Yippee!

The final was against Foremarke Hall A Team. The match was tight and certainly very exciting. It was end to end ball, however Foremarke went 2-0 up but S. Anselm’s never gave up. Jessica R-S and Annie G-P in particular! There was an opportunity on goal and a short corner was called and we scored, but unfortunately the goal was disallowed due to the short corner being called so that was very unlucky. However in the closing minute of the game another short corner was called and S. Anselm’s scored with finesse. The end result was 2-1 to Foremarke Hall. S. Anselm’s had finished 2nd in the competition. A truly brilliant performance!
It was wonderful to see the girls going up for their medals – what a great start for the Winter term 2011!

A huge thank you must go to top coach Derek Brock who is not only an inspirational coach but a great person to work with from a coaches and pupils perspective! As always a huge thank you to our parents for their continuous support, in particular Mrs Renshaw on crutches, who made it to every match on the sideline on time !!

Roll on the season – back to hard training on Monday…..
