Players of the tournament - Lucy Edwards and Charlotte Perkins.

When we left S.Anselm's the trees and fields were crisp white and looking very frosty.  The temperature was -8 degrees and the U13A netball team were ready to heat up the day with their dynamic play!  The team had a tough set of games ahead of them with 3 schools already having had a full term of netball and S. Anselms only having had 2 practices.  However, the team did not let this trouble them.  In the first match V Bablake, it took S. Anselm's time to settle down and they were losing the ball too often which allowed Bablake to take the lead.  However as time progressed S. Anselm's started to realise that they were just as good as Bablake and gained confidence in their own played and managed to narrow the gap.  However, in just 12 minutes one way, Bablake pipped S.Anselm's to the post and won 4 -3.  With a few more practices S. Anselm's would have certainly been strong contenders to win that match.  The next match was against Foremarke Hall A.  It was a close match in the opening minutes, however the defence Lucy E and Issy E marked impressively and provided opportunities for S. Anselm's to take the lead.  Charlotte P worked hard in the centre court with Eliza W and Emily D sending accurate balls into Hannah S to finish off with clear shots on goal.  The final score line was a pleasing 6 - 4 win to S. Anselm's.   The next match against Bromsgrove was extremely competitive and goals were scored on each teams centre pass.  With 30 seconds to go, Bromsgrove scored and eventually went into the lead.  S. Anselm's were extremely unlucky not to have secured a draw or win against last years winners.  Lucy, Issy and Charlotte once again provided solid man to man marking to ensure that the attack had regular opportunities to increase the scoreline.  The match V Foremarke Hall B started off quite slowly.  S. Anselm's made silly mistakes in the centre court and really needed to pick up their game.  5 minutes into the game and S. Anselm's were 2 -2 and had to improve their basic skills in order to win the game.  Cecily C-E, Imogen W,  Emily D and Hannah S started to impress and set up some exciting play around the attacking circle. The final score was 7 - 2 to S. Anselm's.  The last match of the day was against Loughborough High School.  Mrs Northcott decided to change the team for the final game allowing Charlotte P to play as Centre, Eliza W as Wing Defence and Cecily C-E as Wing attack.  For this particular game it was the right decision.  The ball flowed from defence into attack and it was very exciting to see Hannah receiving a first time ball.  The defence marked tightly and the confidence in the team was extremely evident.  Good strong passing, tight marking and accurate shots on goal secured a solid 7 - 3 win to S. Anselm's.  This final match was certainly the game of the day. It highlighted elements of play that S. Anselm's are capable of producing in every training session and in future matches.  Overall the girls had a super day. It was a good solid start to the season which highlighted where the weaknesses and strengths are within the team.  It has now given the team and Mrs Northcott areas to work on, ready for the season ahead. We are all looking forward to an extremely competitive and exciting term of netball.  Thank you to all parents and spectators who supported the team in zero degree weather.  Well done to all players for your super attitude throughout the day and for representing the school brilliantly on and off the court.
