Just fantastic! Every boy contributed to what was a memorable victory, against good opposition, at a spectacular flood lit venue.
From the 1st whistle the SA boys took it to them.
Each boy understood his role in the team effort and gave everything; whether in a scrum, a lineout, a ruck, backs move, tackle or, indeed, a carry of the ball.
The boys were up against it though. The opposition were large and were no mugs. Additionally, the penalty count of 13 to 2 (against us) also took its toll. The SA boys, however, have grown close during their recent trip to France and clearly wanted this game. The apparent desire and will to fight for everything was evident to all watching and this hunger expressed itself through a rapid pressing ‘blue wall’ that took no prisoners. SA capitalised on errors (pouncing on the loose ball) and, regardless of the poor weather, moves were executed with precision. The phases were linked together with tempo and dynamism; a credit to the runners and especially Charlie H who controlled the flow of the game very well indeed.
SA had much of the possession and were only denied a number of scores through some last ditch and very desperate efforts by Mt St Mary’s in their own 22.
Our 5 pointer was eventually claimed by both Charlie H and Alex V (who led again by example with some storming aggressive runs) in the second half; this after immense forward pressure and a harsh call of ‘held up!’ moments before which denied Elliott W some glory. Will A stepped up nonchalantly and ‘slotted’ home an impressive conversion.
The boys enjoyed the large pitch and Charlie H and Will A relieved pressure at all the right times with some splendid kicking from hand. The kick chase strategy has become a potent weapon now and the SA pressing back line looked capable of grabbing a try every time the ball was ‘hoofed’ deep into their half.
One highlight for me was seeing Freddie H demonstrate real belief in his ability as a strike runner making a scintillating 30m run in the first couple of minutes. This was only matched by another superb solo effort, from Freddie again, in the last 15 minutes of the game.
The Subs (Oliver G, Alex T and Charlie L) all made an impact when they came on and Oliver will be remembered for that match saving tackle in the last 10 minutes of the game.
Man of the Match for me is Charlie H because of his all-round contribution (kicking, tackling and runs).
Well done to all!!
