The girls did not have the same energy or enthusiasm compared to the game the previous day against their parents. The conditions were again very hot and sticky on top field and there was a little bit of waiting around, as Sheffield High did become lost en route. We knew it would be a tough game to end the season, as Sheffield High have over 130 girls in year 8 to pick from and we played everybody from that year group – 11 in total. There must be something in the water at their school, as the majority of them were over 6 foot tall and with legs that long they unsurprisingly proved to very nippy around the posts. Having lost the toss they were put into bat first and got off to a good start, with several of them hitting the ball powerfully and into the gaps on the field. We were not as quick to react in the deep and didn’t always remember to use our long barrier technique compared to yesterday. Sheffield High had requested a shorter innings, so after 21 good balls they had scored an impressive 11½ rounders. We batted well, but did not hit the ball quite so consistently as Sheffield High. That said we took advantage of their fielding errors, but our total was 7 at half time.
The second innings had to be cut even shorter, to a mere 18 good balls, as they were concerned that they would be late back to school for their girls’ pick up. Chloe R-S took an awesome catch in this fielding innings and Olivia C was back on form in the deep. Our usually impressive backstop to 1st post tactic was not so proactive today, with us just being a little too slow to stump the player out on occasion. Good covering of the posts and stumping by Nancy S and Emma H caused us to whittle down the Sheffield High batters to 4, pretty good going from 18 good balls, and limited Sheffield High to only 5½ rounders in this innings.
Just like the parents yesterday, we proved to be the victors in the second innings, taking our chances to notch up the half rounders and add a further 6 to our total. It did not always work out, but with only 18 good balls to score from, it had to be done! Emma H hit a cracking ball to the left to score a full rounder and captain Lily S hit a super one off the first ball of this innings, to lead her team by example.
A close game, who knows, we might just have had the edge if we had played two full innings of 36 good balls, but we will never know. Thanks to all of our supporters for their encouragement and positive comments throughout the season. Thanks also to all of the under 13s for a fun term - you have had a slow start, but have really come into your own since the house matches were played. School rounders colours will be awarded in the final assembly of the term, so well done to those girls who have earned them! Enjoy Scotland!
