Player of the Match – Olivia C (chosen by the parents), for her superb batting and fast reactions in the deep, well done!
U13 Squad:
Backstop – Emma H
Bowler – Nancy S
1st post – Lily S
Fielders: Hattie R, Hannah S, Olivia C, Chloe R-S, Roxane B, Lucy R, Lucia, Maria.
After the cold, wet conditions of the hockey, the weather for this game was in complete contrast, with it being the hottest day of the year by far and quite humid on top field. The girls were suitably attired in their match tops with pj bottoms and war paint on their faces. The atmosphere was relaxed, with plenty of supporters and a huge parent team (14 fielding in the second innings!)
The girls, having won the toss, fielded first and were on excellent form. They committed to catches and held them well and the deeps reacted quickly to balls that came their way, with Olivia C and Chloe R-S both working very hard. Emma H again proved to be a top drawer backstop, quickly collecting the miss hits and throwing them very accurately to Lily on first post; a tactic that saw several of the parents fall by the wayside. After 36 balls the parents had scored a respectable 8 rounders and only suffered one casualty Mr Rusling, who twisted his knee getting to first post. They enjoyed a well deserved cup of Pimms and some delicious cherries before taking to the field. The girls continued their good from, hitting the ball well and aiming for the gaps in the field. They were fast around the posts and took advantage of missed opportunities at second post to go on and score a full rounder. Hattie R and Emma H tested them with their left handed batting; whist Olivia C, Chloe R-S, Nancy S, Lily S and Lucy R all hit the ball powerfully too. Half time saw them comfortably 7 rounders ahead and the parents were grateful for the boost provided by Mrs Strange’s tasty chocolate brownies!
The parents connected with the ball more impressively in the second innings, despite losing a crucial batter (Mr Hill) on the first ball. Mrs Booker and Mr Renshaw-Smith hit the ball impressively, but plenty more kept on notching up the halves, to give them an impressive 14½ rounders in this innings. As mentioned earlier, 14 of them piled on to the field for the girls’ second batting innings and it was a fine team performance by all. Mr Strange stumped plenty out at first post, whilst Mr Rick, Mr and Mrs Southam proved to be very useful in the deep and Mrs Hill at stumping. Mrs Smith developed an excellent method of retrieving the ball from the floor, using her foot and Mr Renshaw-Smith’s bowls proved a lot harder to hit. Some also used vocal tactics to try to put their daughters off (Mr Hill!) The girls scored a commendable 13 rounders in this innings, meaning they won the game overall, but it was the parents who proved to be the victors of the second innings. Well played all, a really fun, enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon. Thanks to Mr and Mrs Berry for the Pimms and to Mr and Mrs Strange for the highly enjoyable refreshments.
The girls came up with some superb awards for each of the parents, which captain Lily did a fantastic job of announcing in the match tea afterwards, so here they are for your amusement:
