It was a long old way to travel to Packwood Haugh for this tournament, but they are a sporty school, so we knew we would be in for a cracker of an afternoon. The tournament was very well organised, with us not having to wait too long between matches and it was great to encounter some new opposition. We were off to a good start in our first game, 0 – 0 at half time, but scored in the second half, after some persistent attacking. We made quite hard work of our 2nd game, it should have been tied up in the first half, but again it took us until the 2nd to score, but when the goal came it was well worth it, a super flick at goal by Freya H, unstoppable for the goalie. Our third opposition were the strongest we had encountered in our group and it was vital that we came on to the pitch all guns a blazing. We did, raising our game several notches and dominating play from the offset. Millie C’s goal came from a super through ball from Nancy J, after she had skilfully brought the ball down the pitch and crossed it into the D. Job done, semi finals here we come!

As winners of our group we faced the runners up of the other – Queen’s Chester. Again, we began impressively, attacking relentlessly and dominating play. Our only goal came at the start of the second half, but Chester were determined not to give up and a hairy moment ensued, where we missed a tackle and left Grace B on her own to face a one on one with the forward. She made a fabulous save and then the backs cleared the ball, with normal service being resumed. In the final we had to move pitches and faced Packwood, who had the benefit of playing on their own surface. They proved to be very good at distributing the ball, hitting it forwards and running on to it, using the middle channel a lot. One of their players was excellent at finishing off the ball too and although we had our chances, we were weaker in this area than them; with our shots going wide, or straight at the goalie. The final score doesn’t reflect the end to end play of this game and the fact that we had complete control of the game for a large part of the second half. There was no getting away from the fact that Packwood had tremendous fire power though and were very at home on their own pitch. It was an exciting final with goalie Grace even being subjected to a penalty flick! Special mention to our backs, who up until the final game were solid and impenetrable, well done Poppy and Emily GP! A super afternoon of hockey, enjoyed by all, thanks to Mr Brock for umpiring and driving and to our ever faithful gang of parental support! IAPS Regionals here we come!
