Section B was an extremely tough draw and it was crucial that S. Anselm’s were focussed and ready from the umpires whistle in the first match. It was against Denstone, S. Anselm’s got off to a great start, providing opportunities on goal and defending hard. The match ended 0-0 draw and this certainly gave confidence to the team and for the rest of the tournament. The next two matches were fantastic! Great attacking hockey played from S. Anselm’s and great results to reflect on the play. The final match for the round was against Packwood. They were certainly a solid side and it was an excellent match to watch, both competitive and played in positive spirit, final score 0 – 0. Before the final round of matches in the section, S. Anselm’s, Denstone College and Packwood were all level. After keeping Packwood to a draw in the final match ensured 2nd place in the section, this was also due to Denstone losing to Packwood in their final match for the section. The final positions for the section were Packwood 1st, S. Anselm’s 2nd, Denstone 3rd and 4th = Lakeland and Wrekin College. S. Anselm’s went on to play the winners of the other section which was against Moor Park, this was probably the best match that I had seen from the U13VII side. The team were positive in attitude, play and most of all were 100% determined to make the final. As their coach, it was so wonderful to see. A fine performance from the team and they were rewarded with a 2 -0 win and booked their place in the final. Fully deserved! The final was against Abberley. It was certainly a close match, 2 main opportunities in the match, 1 for Abberley and a very close shot on goal from S. Anselm’s sadly not to score. The end result was 1 – 0 to Abberley. The final placings were 1st Abberley, 2nd S. Anselm’s, 3rd = Packwood and Moor Park who decided to share the bronze position due to a draw at full time. Overall it was an outstanding performance from the U13A VII S. Anselm’s team. All players have learnt a lot, working together is crucial for success, go from the whistle, new tactics and penalty strokes from attacking and defending viewpoints. All this will be excellent preparation for the IAPS Regional tournament in a few weeks time.
A huge thank you must go to Mr Brock for his excellent coaching tips, for umpiring as well as driving the team to and from the fixture.
U13A VII team, I am so proud to be your coach today – many congratulations on your success, you fully deserve your medals. Well done! MPN.
