It was extremely difficult in selecting the team for this fixture, particularly with the match only being 9 a side and at training having all the 5th form girls fighting for a place in the A team it certainly gave Mrs N a tough decision to make. This year we have had breadth and true dedication to training, and every games session is competitive and lots of fun! However, Mrs Northcott did finally manage to select 10 girls of which they represented the school brilliantly! In the first half S. Anselm’s
started off very slowly and were still a little sleepy from the coach journey, however after the first goal was scored by Fleur Green ( LF), S. Anselm’s started to motor into top gear. Even though the girls were playing on grass, their aim was to continue to play just as if they were playing on astro which meant that the girls needed to run with the ball and attack the D confidently. This is just what they did. When S. Anselm’s had possession of the ball Georgia R-S (RM), Emily G-P ( CM) and Nancy John ( LM) continued to attack and on free hits, they decided to self take and run with the ball which allowed spectacular breaks in play into the S. Anselm’s attacking D. In the first half Grace Dieu fought hard for the ball but the S. Anselm’s defence proved too strong and gain possession forcefully and competitively. Well done to Poppy M, Charlotte P and Lydia F. At half time the score was 3 – 0, Georgina H and Millie Caudwell playing key roles with the scoreline. Mrs Northcott and Mr Brock had an extremely productive half time talk. The girls really needed to show that they were hungry for the ball and when they had it, to keep the ball moving. Mr Brock’s direct quote at half time certainly set us up for the second half! He stated, “The only time I want to see you hitting the ball and giving the ball away is in the oppositions circle, when you are having a shot at goal and we can then watch them picking the ball out the back of the net” D Brock 2009.
I like your thinking Mr Brock! Back to the second half, the girls were on fire. Within 3 minutes Millie C set up and finished off the goal of the game, making it 4 – 0. The team were continually reversing the ball around the opposition and played a super attacking game, which meant that poor Grace B ( GK) did not have much to do but in the second half she did touch the ball briefly ( very briefly!) There were 2 more goals scored by Nancy J and Millie C ( a hat trick for Millie C), which ensured a good solid win for the U13 S. Anselm’s team. Many congratulations to the whole team. Another fine performance with lots of entertaining shots on goal! Roll on next week’s match. Thank you to all the parents for their support, as always it was great to see you all. Have a lovely Exeat break. MPN.
