Players of the match – Congratulations to Lily S ( Left Mid) and Olivia C ( Goal Keeper)
The U12 and U13 girls have certainly worked hard in training over the past week and it was difficult to make a selection for the first match of the term. We knew that Wellow House was a tough side having girls playing for County and Club, but this was certainly not going to get in the way of a good match. In the first half, Wellow House were on fire and certainly made use of their Centre Forward who certainly dominated their team. After 2 minutes, there was a break in play and Wellow House scored, going 1 – 0 ahead. S. Anselm’s defending was poor and they certainly needed to wake up and react quicker to the oppositions breaks in play – particularly by key players. S. Anselm’s did pick up their game, particularly Chloe R-S, Lily S and Annie G- P playing well in midfield. Jessica R-S went onto play as a back and she certainly inspired the rest of the team with her determination and good solid tackling. Emma H came strong as Right back and made exceptional tackles to provide opportunities for S. Anselm’s. S. Anselm’s were winning the ball continuously, Nancy S and Arabella H were skilful in midfield, but also positioned well in the attacking D to provide plenty of opportunities for shots on goal. S. Anselm’s started to play as a strong cohesive team and their play was effective on the pitch but we were just unfortunate not to score in the first half. At half time, S. Anselm’s were 2 – 0 down and there was a lot of work to do. Key coaching points were raised at half time and Mrs Northcott knew her team were up for it! They went back onto the pitch looking confident and hungry for a goal. Again, changes in positions were made and Fran F and Lucy R were ready for action in defence. Defensively they started to time their tackles well particularly on the Wellow House Centre Forward player. A short corner was called and S. Anselm’s kept the tactics simple which resulted in Jessica R-S ( midfield) scoring S. Anselm’s first goal. What a treat! It was super to see S. Anselm’s providing persistent pressure particularly in the midfield and forward positions. It was great to see Chloe using her wings ( Annie G-P, Jessica R-S and lily S) productively and setting up the ball into the S. Anselms D for the forwards, Arabella H, Nancy S to finish off spectacularly with shots on goal. It was super to see so much possession in the S.Anselm’s attacking half which was eventually rewarded by a second goal scored by Arabella H. S. Anselm’s showed expertise in transferring the tactics given at half time onto the pitch within minutes and they continued to do this for the remainder of the match. Olivia C continued to make outstanding saves of which she showed flexibility and good reactions – well done! Defensively the backs and midfield certainly played their part in the second half. They started to gain more confidence and defended very high whilst maintaining defensive cover if there was a break in Wellow House attacking play. Well done Olivia for making key saves at crucial times and congratulations to the whole team for a good solid start. Overall a good solid performance against a tough side, the final score 2 – 2. Thank you to our parents for their support, it was lovely to see you all. MPN
