U9 Rugby @ Barlborough Festival
Wednesday saw our U9A, and for a first time U9B, squads play in the Barlborough Festival. This was a spectacular afternoon not least for the wonderful sunshine and splendid rugby played.
Under 9 A
The afternoon began with our second bout of the season against Wellow. With a less than auspicious start Anselm’s were quick to concede an early try. They retaliated in style and were stopped short of the line several times, before going over to have a try sadly disallowed. Wellow managed to sneak in another try to finish the game 10-0, which was a try better than last week’s result against the same team. Well done Fellas!
Our second challenge of the afternoon pitted against Hymers. These were a physical team and proved tricky opposition. Some good solid breaks by Anselm’s were stopped short and the opposition had less trouble in completing their efforts to finish 15-0 ahead.
The final game of the day was certainly a case of saving the best to last, facing Birkdale. There was a rapid initial exchange of tries, with Toby dB putting through a classic try down the wing straight from the free-pass. Arthur L was next able to batter over the line and put down our second of the day. Finally Toby once again managed to prise his way through the back line to close his second and our final score. The games ended after a thrilling fifteen minutes with both teams 3 tries a piece, 15-15 all.
Despite the two losses all the boys performed their best and have significantly improved since the start of the season. Further work is required on taking the ball at pace and rucking over at breakdowns. Both Arthur L and George L made some great attacking breaks. Captain Toby dB was superb in both offence and defence. Well done chaps, a top effort. You will get a second chance to have a crack at the Birkdale boys this weekend.
Wellow – Lost 25-0
Hymers– Lost 15-0
Birkdale – Lost 15-10
Overall man of the tournament = Toby dB
Tackler of the tournament = Josh G
Under 9 B
The U9B’s went into the Festival looking forward to what, for most of them, was their first ever match.
As the tournament progressed there was a huge improvement from the whole team. There were some superb runs from Matthew W and Russell F, both of whom scored excellent tries. Harry T had two ‘man of the match’ performances, with solid tackling and some brilliant attacks. Wilson W took to the scrum half position superbly.
Both coaches were delighted with the progress the team made. The boys really came together and supported each other. As the day developed the tackling was far better and the confidence going forward improved dramatically. There is much to take from this tournament, in particular in the tackling and at the breakdown.
An encouraging first performance and one that will have a couple knocking at the A team's door.
St Peter & St Pauls – Lost 25-0
Westbourne – Lost 15-0
Barlborough – Lost 15-10
Overall man of the tournament = Harry T
Many thanks to Barlborough for hosting a brilliant tournament and to all of the teams who played with spirit and determination and showed good sportsmanship.
A special thank you must go to all the parents who supported us and especially those yummy mummies that helped with our transport. We look forward to seeing you this weekend too!
