U9 v Wellow House

U9 v Wellow House

This was the Under 9's first match of the season, having a short time and limited practice sessions to prepare and the art of tackling only just learnt, this match proved to be a stern test against bigger boys. The match was played at a quick pace with both sides playing good rugby. Wellow took the lead with a well executed try mid way through the first half , S. Anselm's rose to the challenge and responded almost immediately with a try by Williams. The match remained very even until just before half time when Wellow regained the lead.

After re-grouping at half time S. Anselm's raised the tempo of the game and came close to equalising on several occasions, but this came to nothing. Wellow then broke out of defence and went the length of the pitch to score another try and take a commanding 15-5 lead. The response from S. Anselm's was magnificent and their never say die attitude came to the fore , scoring two tries through Drury and Williams to level the scores at 15-15. Wellow then ran in another try to regain the lead and with less than 5 minutes remaining S. Anselm's were looking in danger of losing their first match especially when they were reduced to 8 players after Hardcastle had to leave the field injured after executing a crunching tackle to thwart a Wellow attack. But there was still time for S. Anselm's to mount a final attack and this brought the equalising try by Drury, soon after this the final whistle sounded and the final result was an honourable 20-20 draw.

A hard first match in which everyone contributed and learnt a great deal. The areas for work on the practice field before the next match away at Maidwell Hall are tackling and ball retention.
