U9 v Wellow House Lost 7 - 6 1/2

Despite a few light drops of rain the under 9 game was going ahead and the girls were eager to play. Unfortunately we lost the toss and were batting first, however after a few balls the girls were getting into the swing and it wasn’t long until Holly was scoring her first half rounder! Amber was soon to follow, scoring another half, and the girls were looking strong in the batting square and cheering each other on. It was unfortunate that as we were at our peak and giving the fielders a good run around we ran out of balls!

Next it was our turn to field and the girls got off to a strong start, with the team working hard to get the ball back to Holly (bowler), stopping Wellow scoring any half rounders. Tilly even ran one girl out at first base! Miriam also mastered the long barrier in this match and was executing it brilliantly. Despite a few minor mistakes and stumping third when we really needed it at second the girls had a strong start and was leading the way by the end of the first innings.

Second Innings

The batters got off to a good start however it seemed Wellow had woken up and they were quick to respond. Although we were hitting the ball, there wasn’t enough time for us to get to second post and score those much needed half rounders. Some of the batters felt the pressure and began to take risks too early and ended up being stumped out, knocking the confidence of the team.

The sudden lack of confidence was also reflected in our fielding. We were doing well stopping the ball when did not go far but when on the odd occasion they did get a good hit we fumbled under the pressure. The game was stolen on the second to last ball when they got a clean hit and the girls panicked under the pressure.

Overall it seemed a shame after such a brilliant, dominating first innings we lost at the last hurdle. The game was a big learning curve for the girls and highlighted fielding areas we need to improve on and reacting well under pressure. A big well done to them for supporting and cheering each other on throughout the game, this little team seems to have gelled.
