Player of the Tournament George W
This was a very good day for the Under 9 team, playing a total of five matches, giving all the players in the squad of ten plenty of pitch time. The team played some good football during the afternoon.
The first match was one to forget, the boys were very slow out of the blocks and the tone was set when a regulation scoring chance was spurned in the first minute. The team defended poorly allowing Ranby to score three breakaway goals and the final score line was not a reflection of what the boys were capable of.After getting this blip out of the way the boys played some great football. Against Mylnhurst George W was commanding in midfield linking well with Jack W in attack and this paid dividend when Jack scored. S.Anselm’s defended much better in this match, Alexander S was a rock, ably supported by Arthur L. Both George L and Toby d l B played solid games and Marcus K was brave in goal and a well deserved win was earned.
Next up were Westbourne who had beaten Ranby by 4 goals, so the boys went into the match with some trepidation. Westbourne were a fine side, but S.Anselm’s never gave an inch and battled to the end. Eventually a 3-2 loss was recorded with George W scoring both goals. The Westbourne team were undefeated on the day and their coach commented that S.Anselm’s were the best team they played during the afternoon.
The team then recorded a 1-0 win against St Peter & St Paul with Jack W scoring the goal and then finished with a 2-0 win over the hosts Barlborough Hall with Alexander S and Jack W scoring. The boys were now playing well and Max H, Shea J and Sam W all developed through the afternoon, with Sam using his pace and skill well.
A great afternoon and very well done boys. A big thank you to all the parents who travelled and gave the boys tremendous support.
