U9A Rugby v Grace Dieu
This was a tough match with an opposition offering a deadly combination of skill and power. Anselm’s immediately found themselves on the back foot and spent most of the game defending. The tackling was immensely improved from previous games and it was only with difficulty that Grace Dieu managed to squeeze tries past us.
Sadly the Anselm’s side found it very difficult to get much momentum. We were very strong at breakdowns and set up some terrific rucks and mauls, however these were often too easily countered by the visitors. In attack Anselm’s backs were too static in receiving the pass, although the accuracy and frequency of passing had generally improved.
The closing moments of the first half were a fantastic war of attrition, with Anselm’s doggedly defending their own 5 metre line without giving and inch in phase after phase of play. This was truly the spectacle of the match and showed some real determination.
The second half began badly with a try just given away through bad passing and communication. However from the ashes came a glimmer of hope as George L made a terrific break through the opposition to put in Anselm’s first and only try of the match. Honourable mentions must be made of Josh G and Shea J for their Herculean efforts in tackling. Once again Russell F was a real force to be reckoned with at breakdowns. Well done guys – great improvement.
Result: Lost 35-5
Man of the match: George L
