U9A v Barlborough

It was another terrific afternoon of rugby with Barlborough kindly agreeing to host not just an A team at U9 level, but also a training match for U9B’s too. The A’s started very strongly and immediately took control of the game with some firm tackling denying Barlborough possession. Toby quickly led the fore and put in a solid, single handed try.

S. Anselm’s continued to gain in momentum and effectively dominated all the play. Several great tackles led to breakdowns where the Anselm’s ferocity continually yielded them the ball. It was from such a breakdown that Toby was able to blast through his second try of the game. It was with great sportsmanship that the Captain, Toby agreed to give up his place on the field in favour of a replacement. A next try from a combination of Arthur L and Jack W, was sadly disallowed due to a forward pass.

Great tackles were demonstrated in abundance, most particularly from George L and the tenacious efforts of James B. It was to huge cheers that Henry W and Josh G were able to put in their first ever tries. Anselm’s were unstoppable and it was only through several tactical substitutions that the game was any form of contest. The referee was punishing of any Anselm’s errors and this combined with a questioned decision resulted in a penalty 5m from their own line, which Barlborough were happy to take full advantage of.

It was immensely pleasing to see the U9A’s starting to really gear up their play. Newcomer Matthew W made an excellent impact in his debut appearance. They will need to continue to work on their rucks and mauls. Despite some slick passing, they will need to increase the pace of their play and run onto the ball more often.

Triumph at last! Well done U9A’s this was a superb effort by all.
