The first Under 9A match took place on a crisp but sunny afternoon on Bottom Field. The pitch was big and the goals enormous!
The boys settled into the match from the off, with the boys passing the ball with success and precision. The midfield of George W, Shea J and Sam W were dominant and able to get the ball to the Jack W and Matthew W up front. After 5 minutes S.Anselm’s made the breakthrough when Jack W finished off a good team move to open the scoring. Our defence marshalled by Captain Alexander S and ably assisted by Max H and Russell F were able to cope with everything Smallwood had to offer and our goal keeper Marcus K was having little to do other than some mammoth clearances with his kicks.
Jack W scored two further goals to complete his hat trick, with clinical finishing. Further opportunities were created by some good interplay and Jack went on to score two more goals before half time, the half time score was 5-0 to S.Anselm’s.
Smallwood made a marked improvement in the second half but the S.Anselm’s team stuck to their task well, but there were a couple of scares in the defence when clearances should have been made but weren’t and Marcus made a couple of fine saves.
The team were still creating chances and an unfortunate own goal increased the lead to six nil. Jack W was not finished and scored a further goal to complete a double hat trick, a fine performance on debut.
A great start, well done, there will be sterner challenges ahead.
