S. Anselm’s 96-2 (18 overs) beat Smallwood Manor 95-5 (20 overs) by 8 wickets
This was a Twenty20 game played in very cold conditions at Smallwood. S Anselm’s won the toss and opted to field. Some good bowling limited a very capable Smallwood side to 95 runs in their 20 overs, with the loss of 5 wickets. After tea S Anselm’s opened the batting rather tentatively at first, with Henry F and Isaac S beginning to score steadily before retiring after 10 overs. Alex W and Edward S took the fight to Smallwood and despite Alex being run out, these two steered the team to an unassailable position. The victory was secured with 2 overs to spare for the loss of only two wickets.
The team played well on the whole. The bowling was quite good, although inconsistent at times. The batting showed promise, although there was a little too much stepping away from the ball from certain boys. The fielding needs work however, and no one should be trying to stop the ball with the foot in future!
All in all, an encouraging start to the season. The next match is Birkdale away on Saturday.
